Color Banding Test

Reading screen information…DPR —— bit Browser report

Separating tonal steps from unwanted bands

This test lets you compare continuous and deliberately stepped gradients. Channel, range and direction controls make it easier to describe where a transition stops looking smooth.

Continuous and stepped patterns

A continuous pattern requests a smooth change; a stepped pattern intentionally groups values into levels. Compare the two before interpreting an edge as a fault. Increasing or decreasing the number of steps changes the source pattern, not the physical bit depth of the display.

Channels and tonal ranges

A band can be more visible in a dark range or in one color channel. Keep the chosen range and channel recorded while comparing directions. Use the grayscale view as a neutral reference and avoid changing several output settings at once during a comparison.

Finding the cause

If banding changes between applications, investigate image precision, color profiles and the rendering path as well as the monitor. A visual browser test cannot certify a 6-bit, 8-bit or 10-bit panel. A stronger conclusion needs control over the signal path and a suitable measurement method.

How to run the test

Stepped bands are intentional references. Look for unintended bands in continuous mode.

  1. Start with a continuous gradient.

  2. Increase the band count to compare deliberate steps.

  3. Switch channel and direction to check anomalies that stay in one screen position.

Patterns support visual inspection. Quantitative color accuracy, brightness, gamut coverage and response time require appropriate instruments and methods.

Frequently asked questions

Can this website automatically certify my screen?

No. It provides display test patterns and browser information. Screen anomalies that persist at the same position need visual inspection and, when needed, professional assessment.

Can I use a phone, tablet or TV?

Open the patterns and guides for your device. True full screen and touch depend on the browser; an immersive page preview remains available when full screen is unsupported.

Do I need to install software or upload data?

No installation is needed. Patterns, calculations and interactions run locally in your browser; theme preferences stay on your device.

What should I do if I notice a problem?

Rule out dust, reflections and display settings. Repeat under the same conditions, photograph defects that remain in the same screen position and check the device warranty policy.
