Compare several gradients
Start with grayscale, then try the color and radial patterns. Look for abrupt changes inside a transition that should appear gradual. A band visible in one orientation may be easier to inspect in another. Keep zoom at a known setting and compare the same area of the screen.
The entire rendering path matters
Visible banding can arise from source precision, browser rendering, color transforms or the display path. A CSS gradient removes image-compression artifacts from the source, but it does not isolate every other stage. Compare different applications before assigning the cause to the panel.
Use normal content as a check
After inspecting a synthetic gradient, look at a well-prepared photograph or other content with gradual tones. Patterns can make subtle differences unusually obvious. Record the settings and conditions under which a band appears rather than treating one gradient as a conclusive bit-depth measurement.
