Grayscale Test

Grayscale, shadow detail and uniformity

A display needs to separate neighboring tones as well as show a convincing black and white. Grayscale patterns help you compare those tones without a strong color distracting your eyes.

From black to white

The full-range pattern divides the image into adjustable gray steps. Start with fewer blocks so the differences are easy to find, then increase the number of steps. The darkest and lightest blocks should be inspected separately; seeing the middle steps does not tell you whether either endpoint is clipped.

Shadow and highlight detail

Near-black and near-white patterns concentrate the available steps around one end of the scale. Compare them at your normal brightness and with the room lighting recorded. Changing a black-level or contrast setting may reveal a block while also altering the rest of the image, so check normal photographs afterward.

An even gray background

Uniformity mode holds the entire pattern at one gray value. Look for patches, bands and colored areas while keeping your head in one position. A browser pattern can reveal visible differences, but it cannot measure the panel's contrast ratio, calibrated brightness or the size of a color error.

How to run the test

Try to distinguish neighboring gray patches and look for local color casts.

  1. Use normal room lighting and your usual brightness.

  2. Switch between shadows, highlights and the full grayscale.

  3. Use uniformity mode to compare different screen areas.

Patterns support visual inspection. Quantitative color accuracy, brightness, gamut coverage and response time require appropriate instruments and methods.

Frequently asked questions

Can this website automatically certify my screen?

No. It provides display test patterns and browser information. Screen anomalies that persist at the same position need visual inspection and, when needed, professional assessment.

Can I use a phone, tablet or TV?

Open the patterns and guides for your device. True full screen and touch depend on the browser; an immersive page preview remains available when full screen is unsupported.

Do I need to install software or upload data?

No installation is needed. Patterns, calculations and interactions run locally in your browser; theme preferences stay on your device.

What should I do if I notice a problem?

Rule out dust, reflections and display settings. Repeat under the same conditions, photograph defects that remain in the same screen position and check the device warranty policy.
